Plans to remove a confederate statue in the US state Virginia, seen by many as a symbol of racism, sparked a protest on May 13, in which a group spearheaded by white supremacist Richard Spencer, a leader of the alt-right movement, carried torches reminiscent of a Ku Klux Klan rally.
It followed similar protests last week in New Orleans that called for the removal of monuments to the country's civil war.
