VICTORIA -- More than 3,000 people gathered on the front lawn of the B.C.

Legislature today to protest the Northern Gateway Pipeline project.

The large sit-in aimed to send a message to the provincial and federal governments that piping crude from Alberta to the coast of B.C.

    would not be tolerated.

Several speakers including Aboriginal, union, environmental and political leaders rallied the crowd for hours.

Despite more than 1,000 people indicating they would risk arrest to get the message across, no one was arrested and police activity remained minimal.

Near the rally's end, large black sheets representing an oil tanker were nailed to posts and hammered into the legislature lawn.

Although it was an illegal act, Victoria police did not intervene.

Organizers say the event was a success and plan to rally outside individual MLA offices across the province on Wednesday.
