Mayan calendar reached its end on 21 December 2012, hailed as 'the end of the earth' by conspiracy theorists.
But when nothing happened, they worked out there was a discrepancy with the Gregorian calendar, adopted in 1582.
The 'error' meant that 11 days of the year had been lost, to better reflect the time Earth takes to orbit the sun.
