Mercer wrote a paper in the 70s, predicting the melting of West Antarctica, and he was made a pariah for it.
People called his work junk science, and he had trouble getting funding after that.
Now, scientists have just proclaimed that Mercer was right: his predictions are exactly what is happening.
We do this all the time - we outcast people who tell truths we don't want to hear.
We're doing it again, right now, with Edward Snowden.
We're all caught up in calling him a hero or traitor, instead of intensely studying the ramifications of the truth he revealed.
Humanity has a great way of turning a deaf ear on the truth, and history remembers that.
