Palestinian human rights groups are trying to initiate an international investigation into the treatment of Palestinian civilians by the Israeli military during the Gaza war that could amount to war crimes.

On August the first, and only two hours into a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire, Israel sealed off Gaza’s southern city of Rafah and began shelling it in an attempt to rescue a captured solider.

According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights and the Al-Mezan rights group, the Israeli military fired at least 500 artillery shells and launched at least 100 airstrikes on Rafah within a span of 24 hours.

The two-day operation led to the death of at least 190 Palestinians.

55 of them were children, and 36 others women.

14 victims were from the same family.
