A senior Russian parliamentarian has cautioned the British government that Moscow has more right to Crimea than London to Argentina’s Malvinas Islands also known as the Falklands.

The statement came after British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond criticized the Kremlin for what he called an illegal and illegitimate annexation of the peninsula.

Hammond also accused Moscow of violating the Ukrainian and international law.

Last March, Crimeans voted in a referendum to rejoin Russia.

They rejected the Western-backed government that came to power in Kiev.

The Malvinas Islands have been declared part of the British overseas territories since the UK established its colonial rule on the islands in 1833.

Buenos Aires accuses Britain of occupying the islands.
