US media reports say Israel spied on closed-door talks over Iran's nuclear program involving the five members of the U-N Security Council and Germany, as part of efforts to build a case against a potential deal.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Israeli espionage efforts included eavesdropping as well as acquiring information from confidential US briefings, informants and diplomatic contacts in Europe.

The Journal has cited US officials as saying that the spying operation was part of a campaign by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

They say Netanyahu attempted to undercut support for a deal by sharing the gleaned information with US lawmakers and others.

Israeli officials have denied spying directly on the US negotiators.

The revelation comes against the background of President Barack Obama's already difficult relationship with Netanyahu.
